HEADLINES

In just three months, we will celebrate 50 years of providing services to our communities! We’re excited to host an event to mark the occasion.

May 11, 2023
5 – 9 p.m.
Turf Valley Resort
Ellicott City, MD

A lot changes in the span of five decades, but the goal always remains to meet our mission: To support and empower individuals who face social or economic challenges — by building pathways to economic equity, opportunity, and independence. Through strategic risk taking and a proactive approach, Humanim operates over 35 diverse, but interconnected programs. We’re proud to serve 3,000+ individuals throughout Central Maryland.

Don't forget to buy your tickets! This event is a great opportunity to catch up with old friends while investing in impact initiatives that help our communities thrive. The celebration includes a networking reception, dinner, program, and open bar.

K-9 Units Visit Humanim’s Meaningful Day Program

Did you know dogs can smell up to 100,000 times better than humans? PetMD states they have up to 300 million olfactory receptors in their noses, versus only 6 million for us.

This is just one of the facts our Meaningful Day participants learned from the Baltimore City and Howard County police departments’ K-9 Unit visits.

Participants were eager to meet the dogs and hear about their responsibilities. These impressive animal partners have been trained to detect weapons and narcotics, as well as protect citizens.

During the month of March, we recognize the contributions of disabled persons and the barriers they face. We are advocates for disability inclusion. Our organization was founded on the belief that every human being has potential and that work is transformative, with the goal of creating economic equity for individuals with disabilities and socio-economic challenges.

HUMAN IMPACT

Meet Tonia

From Humanim to the White House: The Story of Tonia, Class of 2017

“Workforce development is needed in Baltimore City. If we want to help resolve poverty, violence, crime, and broken homes, it’s places like Humanim that are extremely needed.”
It was during Humanim’s Award-Winning Administrative Assistant Career Training that Tonia's journey to becoming a White House Executive Assistant began. Tonia attended the information session determined to take on the knowledge the training had in store for her. She didn’t know at the time just how integral this knowledge would become as she built the career of her dreams. She established a meaningful relationship with Wini Alexander, Training Manager of our Workforce Development Team. Wini recognized the skills within her and encouraged her to reach to her highest potential, rather than settle for less.

Tonia made important connections with Humanim’s employer partners. She also connected with the Employment Manager at Towson University,  who led her to her first opportunity after graduation as an administrative assistant for the Chairperson at the Department of Health and Sciences. Then, she landed a position in the President's Office at Towson University.  In 2018, Tonia made her next career move to support the Associate Vice President of HR at Johns Hopkins University.

Through the power of networking, she found and secured her current role as an Executive Assistant for a Biden Presidential Appointee, Dr. Elizabeth Fowler, in April 2021.
