Humanim’s Behavioral Health Department serves individuals struggling with mental illness and substance use disorders. We embrace a person-centered recovery culture that empowers individuals to learn from their mistakes and successes and follow their own life’s plan. Like all of Humanim’s programs and services, our focus is on individualized care and self-empowerment.
Evidence Based Practice Supported Employment
Our Evidence Based Supported Employment (EBSE) program supports individuals with a mental health diagnosis in their efforts to achieve and maintain steady employment in mainstream competitive jobs, either part-time or full-time. We use a person-centered approach to ensure individuals’ long term employment goals are met. It is centered on the principle that competitive employment is not only attainable for people with mental illness but in many cases can be part of their recovery process. The EBSE program is closely integrated with the various members of a client’s mental health treatment team to ensure continuity of service. Humanim is the recipient of the Johnson and Johnson-Dartmouth Achievement Award recognizing our EBSE Program. Services provided include but are not limited to:
• Resume building
• Job readiness
• Interviewing skills
• Employment support
• Reporting income/budgeting skills
Services are provided for Howard County and Anne Arundel County residents.
Supported Living & Housing Program
Our Supported Living services are provided to adults (18 and older) who receive Medicaid, are diagnosed with a chronic, severe, persistent mental illness, and live independently in Howard County. We offer a continuum of services to meet the unique needs of the individual that will keep them successfully living independently. Services and activities are designed to assist individuals in improving self-sufficiency, increasing choice, gaining control of their lives, and increasing participation in the community. Supported Living services are provided in the individual’s home and at various locations throughout the community, based upon the needs and desires of the individual served. Services can include:
• Advocacy and landlord mediation
• Health Homes care coordination and medical support
• Financial management, budgeting, and life skills instruction
• Case management, entitlements assistance, and community resource connections
Residential Rehabilitation Program
Funded by Maryland Medical Assistance (Medicaid), the Residential Rehabilitation Program provides housing, case management, and psychiatric rehabilitation to adults with chronic, severe, and persistent mental illness. The program takes a person-centered, recovery-focused approach to helping individuals reach their full potential, living independently in the community. We provide services to ages 18-25, as well as 26 and older.
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Day Program
Humanim’s Psychiatric Rehabilitation Day Program (PRP) promotes increased independence while allowing individuals to focus on recovery and well-being in a structured and therapeutic environment. Our day program provides these services to adults (18 and older) who receive Medicaid and are diagnosed with a chronic, severe, persistent mental illness. Our person-centered services assist individuals in understanding and managing their mental illness, as well as learning daily living skills that will ensure success in the community. Daily educational groups and activities include, but are not limited to:
• Evidence based illness management and recovery
• Community integration
• Social and problem solving skills
• Recovery-based substance abuse education
• Health Homes care coordination and medical support
• Case management, entitlements assistance, and community resource connections

Community Support Services (Targeted Case Management)
Our Community Support Services Program connects individuals with severe or persistent mental illness with necessary mental health, medical, vocational, and entitlement services in Howard County. Services are designed to prevent hospitalizations, improve access to healthcare, and connect people with state and federal benefits. We focus on prevention through community resource connection and utilization, so that individuals can live productive and healthy lives in the community.
Benefits Counseling
Our Certified Benefits Counseling Services support individuals from all walks of life on their journey to financial independence. Our Community Partner Work Incentive Counselors assist individuals in making informed choices about employment, as well as federal and state benefits. Individuals with SSI/SSDI benefits who work with the Division of Rehabilitation Services (DORS), or have a pending DORS application, are eligible for free benefits planning services. Benefits counseling is also available as a private pay service. Services include:
• In-depth counseling on federal and state benefits, including work incentives and benefits
• Information and counseling on special social security rules which allow SSI and SSDI recipients to return to work
• Referrals to federal, state and private agencies to maximize access to resources
• Ongoing assistance with issues related to employment and benefits
