As a Direct Support Professional (DSP), Amirat plays a vital role in empowering individuals with developmental disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. From assisting with daily activities and personal care to fostering skill development, she creates a safe, supportive and enriching environment for those she serves.
Amirat has worked with Humanim in her current role for the past two years. During this time, she has developed a passion for going above and beyond to ensure that the individuals she serves have the necessary resources to thrive. However, it is the relationships she has established with the people that she serves that she enjoys the most.
“I love building meaningful relationships with the individuals I support and seeing their progress. Seeing their confidence grow and knowing I am making a difference in their lives is the most rewarding part of my job.”
When she’s not making an impact at work, Amirat enjoys a variety of interests that bring her joy and balance. “Outside of work, I enjoy traveling, cooking ayamase (ofada stew), a dish that originated from Nigeria, spending time with family, and volunteering. On game days, you can find me cheering for Arsenal FC in the Premier League. These activities help me relax, stay balanced, and give back to my community.”
One of Amirat’s unique strengths is her ability to connect with people from different backgrounds. “Something unique about me is that I speak multiple languages, which allows me to connect with people from different backgrounds and cultures.”
Amirat often finds motivation from a quote by the great Maya Angelou: “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”
This philosophy has guided her journey, especially when she made the courageous decision to switch careers – a challenge that required resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
“Transitioning to a new field required resilience and adaptability, but it helped me grow and strengthened my ability to support others on their journeys.”
Amirat is deeply passionate about her work and takes great pride in being part of a team that promotes dignity, independence, and a culture of belonging. “I value the opportunity to make a real impact on people’s lives. Being part of a team that champions respect and empowerment means the world to me.”
Her dedication to continuous learning and professional growth is what makes her an invaluable part of the Humanim community. “My goal is to become a nurse at Humanim so I can provide even greater care and support to individuals in need. I also hope to take on leadership opportunities and mentor new DSPs. I want to continue making a meaningful impact while growing both personally and professionally.”
With her compassion, drive, and unwavering commitment to those she serves, Amirat is a true Human of Humanim.
