At 17 years old, Joshua Challenger is already exploring a future in the professional world while building skills that will serve him for years to come.
A student at BRAVE Revolutionary Academy, Joshua was introduced to Humanim’s Work-Based Learning Experience (WBLE) program through his DORS counselor. Looking for an opportunity to gain real-world experience, he was matched with an internship at UM St. Joseph Medical Center, where he works as a patient transporter.
Joshua was drawn to the role because he enjoys meeting new people and experiencing new environments. Each shift gives him the chance to do both.
“A regular shift is getting a call to transport a patient to a designated area, then bringing them back when they’re finished,” Joshua explains.
A New View of Healthcare
Working in a hospital has given Joshua a firsthand look at many different departments and operations. His favorite part of the job is simply being able to see the wide variety of settings throughout the hospital and learn how they work together to support patients.
Since starting his internship, Joshua has gained a better understanding of the many areas within a healthcare facility. More importantly, he’s developed skills that extend beyond the workplace.
Building Confidence for the Future
When asked how he’ll use what he’s learned in the future, Joshua points to a personal achievement: becoming more comfortable around others and overcoming his shyness.
Looking ahead, Joshua plans to pursue a career in cybersecurity after graduating from high school. While healthcare may not be his final destination, his internship has helped him build confidence, strengthen his communication skills, and gain valuable workplace experience that will support him wherever his future takes him.
Through Humanim’s Work-Based Learning Experience program, students like Joshua are discovering new possibilities, developing professional skills, and taking important first steps toward their career goals.
