In recognition of Developmental Disabilities Days at the Legislature (DD Days) this week, we are sharing how #DSPsMakeTheDifference. Taking place virtually this year, DD Day is an annual event that allows families, providers, and citizens to advocate for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and meet with representatives about the issues that are important to them.
A parent of two daughters who’ve been involved in Humanim’s Developmental Disability Services over the last 6 years, shared their experience and what a good Direct Support Professional means to them. “The importance of a good DSP is immensely important to both the family and individual with a disability. It takes a team of qualified DSPs to succeed in providing and coordinating appropriate tasks and activities in the home and community to be successful in working on the individual’s goals and objectives. The outcome is to make he or she more independent at work, in the community or at home.”
On why good DSPs matter, she shares, “Trusting someone to come into your home or work with your loved one in the day program has much importance to the family and individual. Because my two daughters don’t have much language, it is imperative the communication between the DSPs and the parent happen often, such as at the beginning of their shift, sometimes during the middle, if needed, and at the end to discuss improvements and or changes or solutions that must take place to make my daughters successful in their everyday lives. We want them to have choices and be valued by their staff… Good DSPs show strong work skills, understanding individuals with disabilities, have a good sense of self and humor. Their good attitude shows in the care that they give individuals, and by being passionate and concerned, knowing that some days will be harder than others.”
Direct Support Professionals not only make a difference in the lives of the individuals but also make an impact on the entire home, “The DSP’s that come to the house become family. We build a team of trust, honesty, and open communication. If a problem arises with one of my daughters, we talk about it and work out solutions the best we can. It takes a village! We value them as partners in our daughters’ care.”
Thank you to all of Humanim’s incredible DSPs, who work to make an impact daily, and stand behind #CommunityForAll.
