Meet DJ Lex: Finding His Rhythm at Humanim

Meet Humanim’s one and only DJ Lex! Also known as Alexei, a participant in our Behavioral Stabilization Unit (BSU) since February. Alexei joined Humanim’s Meaningful Day program in Columbia in 2015. There, he limited his connections with others in the program and demonstrated that more one-on-one engagement from staff would be beneficial for his success. After discussing his goals and aspirations earlier this year, Alexei, his family and the Humanim team determined that the BSU is a perfect place for him to thrive.

Despite feeling nervous in a new environment, Alexei quickly blossomed into Humanim’s rock star! With a microphone in one hand, and lively tunes playing from his phone in the other, Alexei is always jamming with his peers these days – hence the name DJ Lex.

In the BSU, Alexei receives individualized attention from staff, some of which he already knows from the Meaningful Day program. On an average day, he can be seen sharing laughs and music with his friends and fellow program participants. Matt, Humanim’s Director of Community Behavioral Support Services notes that “he’s really blossomed into a personality that I’ve never seen, in fact, I think no one’s ever seen before… I’ve had staff from the Meaningful Day program come to me and say how surprised they are to see Alexei come out of his shell.”

Since joining the BSU Alexei has not missed a single day of programming. His mother frequently comments that “he’s so excited to come to the program and he seems more likely to like express concerns and talk to staff about them.” Placing his trust in Humanim’s team, Alexei has found a place where he belongs.

With his growing confidence and support system by his side, Alexei is currently seeking vocational training through Humanim’s Supported Employment program. He’s looking forward to volunteering for a local organization first, then translating his skills into a paid position in the future.

Everyone is so proud of Alexei and the person he is becoming. Matt remarks, “he seemed more introverted in the Meaningful Day program and now it seems like he’s like a social butterfly… He’s just brought so much light to the program.”
