As Disability Pride Month comes to a close, we’re proud to showcase Jasmine, a rock star in Humanim’s Deaf Services Day Program, who’s taking on new challenges and bringing out the best in herself and others. She joined Humanim after 2020, seeking connection with other Deaf individuals that use American Sign Language. Jasmine also sought guidance for managing anxiety that made it difficult to meet new people and take part in community life.
“At first, I was anxious when it comes to interacting with other people,” shares Jasmine. With support from staff, she began practicing those interactions in real settings. “Staff helped me build my confidence by taking me on outings and interacting with other people more.”
Those outings have become an important part of Jasmine’s experience at Humanim. Cassandra, the Direct Support Professional (DSP) who works with Jasmine, said some of their favorite memories have happened at the museum, where they spend time exploring exhibits and eating together at the café. These moments give Jasmine opportunities to practice communication and enjoy being active in the community.
Jasmine also brings her own personality and interests into the program each day. She enjoys coloring and using her phone to watch short films, activities that give her space to be herself while relaxing and sharing what she likes with the people around her.
Looking back to when Jasmine first started with Humanim, Cassandra has seen her blossom, sharing that Jasmine is “exhibiting increased confidence in her interactions with others in the day program and beyond.”
As Jasmine continues to grow with Humanim, her goals are focused on independence and employment. “I want a job working with other people without feeling anxious.”
For Jasmine, growth means more than feeling comfortable in the day program. It means empowerment, building friendships, and preparing for a future where she can pursue work and new experiences with greater independence.
