Katie has always been passionate about linguistics and languages.
“I’ve always loved languages. I like picking up languages. When I find someone new and find out they speak a new language, I try to talk to them,” Katie said.
Now, as a short-term participant in Humanim’s Evidence-Based Supported Employment program, she is taking steps to turn that passion into a career.
Before joining the program, Katie faced challenges with socializing and communication. Reading situations and understanding social cues could be difficult, and she often felt judged because of her disabilities. Through the program, Katie is building confidence, strengthening workplace communication skills, and learning how to advocate for herself in professional settings.
With support from Humanim, Katie found a job at Walmart where she has already made a number of friends. As she earns an income and builds professional experience, she is also working toward her long-term goals. She’ll soon be taking classes at Frederick Community College to study ASL interpretation and translation.
For Katie, ASL is just an entry point. Eventually, she wants to become an interpreter who is fluent in many languages, including Japanese, Korean and Spanish. “I think it would be cool if I could do interpreting for concerts,” she said. “Then I could put my own spin to it and rock out to it.”
Katie’s goals don’t end with learning languages. Becoming self-reliant and financially independent is also a dream she has for herself. She dreams of a life where she can live independently and travel the world. With support from Humanim, she is on her way to building a life she loves.
