A Recipe for Confidence: City Seeds Ignites Independence in Humanim’s Meaningful Day Program

In this culinary journey by our social enterprise, City Seeds, food isn’t the only thing cooking! We’re serving up confidence, enrichment, creativity, independence, and life-changing skills in every dish. Through these classes, participants in our Meaningful Day program for adults with developmental disabilities not only learn kitchen fundamentals but also gain practical tips on ingredient substitutions and accessible steps to make cooking enjoyable for everyone.

During each hour-long class, everyone learns how to make a new dish, step-by-step. Anything from Maryland crab cakes and quiche to chocolate cake and chicken Caesar salad, with every recipe idea coming from the participants themselves.

“Cooking is only part of what we do. It’s more of a way of showing those we serve they can overcome their barriers, just by setting and accomplishing some goals,” shares Chef Aharon, veteran chef, restaurant owner and the Executive Chef of City Seeds. His approach combines hands-on instruction with encouragement, creating an environment where participants feel supported and inspired to push their limits.

With Chef’s instruction on new recipes and challenges, the classes encourage creativity while reinforcing valuable life skills like planning, teamwork, and adaptability.
